Back to business. Despite this space being completely taken up the past couple weeks with instructions on how to build a pipe bomb that looks like a portfolio, I have actually been quite busy with meetings and shooting. The post-holiday rush finally died at the end of January and it’s been snap-snap-snap ever since.
Back in December the wonderful and talented Shelbie Vermette was hired on as photo editor at Eye Weekly, a neat little weekly publication here in Toronto that’s always packed with great work from some great photographers. She’s been throwing assignments at me left and right much to my delight, so here’s a little rundown and a couple out-takes from each.
First up, Kaz Hayashi; he’s opening up Canada’s 3rd sake brewery in the distillery district in Toronto. It’s also apparently the only one on the eastern side of the continent, which makes it quite unique.
Next up was a funny little assignment. I was tasked with shooting Kat Cizek, a filmmaker in residence at the National Film Board of Canada. Kat is one of the heads of the Highrise project at the NFB, and as such I had actually been working closely with Kat for the past two years! It’s rare that I’ve even ever seen the subjects I shoot before, let alone knowing them. It made for a super relaxed Sunday shoot and good times were had by all.
Ajon Moriyama is one of the heads of a large and long-standing architecture firm in Toronto, responsible for the redesign of the Toronto Reference Library. This shoot went down at the Moriyama & Teshima head office, a gorgeous and busy place with what seems to be a lot going on. It was a really enjoyable shoot and Ajon, although originally uncomfortable having his photo taken, really opened up. Nice guy.
Last but not least, I did some portraits of Darryl Fine, owner of the Bovine Sex Club, a rock bar/venue on Queen West that’s celebrating it’s 20th anniversary this year. I had shot a couple of bands in the Bovine before with uh, varying degrees of success. Very hard place to shoot, but thanks to a very patient Darryl, we eventually nailed it down.
Well, those are just a few of my adventures of late. I’ve been up to plenty more, but those will just have to wait until next time. Thanks Shelbie!
